ABOUT

Mission & Vision

Upower is a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides no-cost fitness classes and health & wellness education to underserved teens in King County, Washington.

We address an absence in schools and community centers caused by funding challenges, therefore offering high school-aged teens broad access to quality programs.

Our vision is to empower teens through physical fitness and wellness activities, inspiring them to take responsibility for their own health, now and throughout their lives.

Why We Need Upower

  • 85% of Seattle Public School high school students with low socio-economic status do not get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day.
  • 89% of King County grade 12 students and 86% of grade 10 students do not participate in daily physical education classes.
  • 75% of Seattle Public School high school students with low socio-economic status do not get the recommended daily number of servings of fruits and vegetables.
  • 55% of King County high school students spend 3 or more hours daily on screen time (watching TV, playing video games, using computers for fun, cell phone usage) versus 60 minutes of physically moving.

Since Upower’s founding in 2013, we have served more than 1,000 teens; established partnerships with 26 area high schools; cultivated relationships with a variety of community-based organizations; and garnered support from numerous corporations, foundations and individuals.
